Selected Poems

    by Ciaran Carson Selected Poems

Ciaron Carson's Selected Poems represents — while yet in his prime — the prodigious poetic creativity of one of Ireland's great writers.

"The selections from each of the seven books of poetry to date ... allow a reader to see the progression and transformation of this enormously inventive poet across twenty-five years. ... This volume is a real opportunity for American readers to get a sense of the reach and imagination of this major Irish poet." Kevin Murphy, Irish Literary Supplement

"No one else writing in Ireland, in English or Irish, can write with this marvelous unraveling entertainment and still make resounding poetry." Gerald Dawe, Irish Times

The Holiday

At breakfast, I remembered
The mutilated sheep we found yesterday.
The pus had thickened to a sour cream
In the pink-lipped wounds;

Their fixed stare recalled
The waitress's eyes, the frivelled lids
Stilled bleared with sleep, the net
Of veins running through the white.

The clouds beyond the window
Curdled suddenly; a whey-coloured skin
Had crawled and wrinkled
On the coffee. Going home to Belfast

We would find a house denied our presence,
The door-handle cobwebbed —
The papers lying, unread, in the hall,
The milk turned sour upon our doorstep.
