Baptist students awarded scholarships to attend WFU

Seventeen North Carolina Baptist students were awarded the William Louis Poteat Scholarship to attend Wake Forest University in the fall 2006. Each scholarship is valued at $11,200 and is renewable for four years for a total value of $44,800. Named for Wake Forest's president from 1905 to 1927, the Poteat scholarships are awarded annually to students who are active members of a Baptist church in North Carolina; have demonstrated excellence in leadership and service in their churches; and have excelled in academics.

Poteat Scholars show promise of making vital contributions to the church and the community during college and after graduation. The scholarship recipients are:

  • Holly Maria Austin of Maiden. Austin is designated the W. D. and Alberta B. Holleman Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. She is the daughter of Nathaniel and Gay Austin and a graduate of Maiden High School. She is a member of East Maiden Baptist Church.

  • Jordan Arthur Benton of Charlotte. Benton is designated the Nathan D. Dail Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. He is the son of Kenneth and Deborah Benton and a graduate of Providence Senior High School. He is a member of St. John's Baptist Church.

  • Alexander Lloyd Blake of Jacksonville. Blake is the son of Clova S. Blake and a graduate of Northside High School. He is a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Jacksonville.

  • Alice Newbern Culclasure of Greensboro. Culclasure is the daughter of Scott and Nancy Culclasure and a graduate of West Guilford High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro.

  • Sarah Catherine Foushee of Statesville. Foushee is the daughter of James and Susan Foushee and a graduate of Statesville High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Statesville.

  • Michelle Marie Gendy of King. Gendy is the daughter of Michael and Marie Gendy and a graduate of West Stokes High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of King.

  • Ross Permar Hilton of Hickory. Hilton is the son of Joseph and Judith Hilton and a graduate of Fred T. Foard High School. He is a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church.

  • Joseph Daniel Keene of Climax. Keene is designated the W. D. and Alberta B. Holleman Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. He is the son of Jimmy and Pamela Keene and a graduate of Eastern Randolph High School. He is a member of Willomore Baptist Church in Greensboro.

  • Sean Gregory Miller of Lansing. Miller is designated the W. D. and Alberta B. Holleman Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. He is the son of Gregory and Patricia Miller and a graduate of Ashe County High School. He is a member of Warrensville Baptist Church.

  • Ryan Hunter Niland of Mount Airy. Niland is the son of Ronald and Vinita Marie Niland and a graduate of Mount Airy High School. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Airy.

  • Latora Shaniqua Pruden of Washington. Pruden's aunt and guardian is Ernestine Pruden. She is a graduate of Washington High School and a member of Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

  • Brittni Michele Shambaugh of Sneads Ferry. Shambaugh is the daughter of Kim Shambaugh Nelson and a graduate of Dixon High School in Holly Ridge. She is a member of Salem Baptist Church.

  • Eva Elizabeth Skipper of Raleigh. Skipper is designated the Minnie and Fred Stone Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. She is the daughter of William and Jennett Skipper and a graduate of Saint Mary's School. She is a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church.

  • Matthew Ryan Steen of Winston-Salem. Steen is the son of Warren and Kathryn Steen and a graduate of Mount Tabor High School. He is a member of Ardmore Baptist Church.

  • Anna Raines Stokes of Winston-Salem. Stokes is designated the Davis Family Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. She is the daughter of Wade and Tara Stokes and a graduate of Mount Tabor High School. She is a member of Knollwood Baptist Church.

  • Joshua Lee Walters of Winston-Salem. Walters is the son of Christopher and Beverly Walters and a graduate of Ledford Senior High School in Thomasville. He is a member of Green Street Baptist Church in High Point.

  • Susan Elizabeth Walters of Fayetteville. Walters is the daughter of Stuart and Jeanne Walters and a graduate of Terry Sanford High School. She is a member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church.
