WFU to create buzz at heads vs. feds debate

The Wake Forest University Student Union will present “Heads vs. Feds: The Great Debate,” with Steven Hager, former editor-in-chief of High Times magazine, and Robert Stutman, a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), April 14 at 8 p.m.

The lecture will focus on the controversial issues surrounding marijuana legalization. The event will be held in the Benson University Center at Wake Forest and admission is free. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

After Hager and Stutman have provided their opening remarks, the floor will be opened for questions. Attendees may ask questions during the show either at a microphone or anonymously, or they may e-mail questions in advance to smithkc0@wfu.edu.

Hager, who was at the helm of High Times from 1988 to 2003, is the founder of The Counterculture Hall of Fame and the Cannibus Cup, a marijuana festival. During the 1990s, he became a leading figure in the hemp legalization movement. He has authored several books including his newest release, “Adventures in the Counterculture: From Hip Hop to High Times,” a compilation of his writings.

Stutman, who has been called “the foremost narc in America” by New York
magazine, launched approximately 5,000 investigations that led to more than 15,000 arrests during his tenure at the DEA. In 1990, Stutman established Substance Abuse Technologies Inc., a management consulting firm that designs and implements substance-abuse prevention programs. He is the recipient of numerous awards from law enforcement agencies across the country.

The debate is part of Wake Forest’s theme year, “Fostering Dialogue: Civil Discourse in an Academic Community,” which is dedicated to exploring how free people with passionate interests and beliefs can communicate openly without turning dialogue into discord.
