In April, the Wake Forest University music department will highlight the musicianship of two Wake Forest students in their senior recitals. Each recital will be held in Brendle Recital Hall in Scales Fine Arts Center at Wake Forest, and admission is free.

On April 3, Wake Forest senior Andrew Estel, a composer and guitarist, will perform at 3 p.m. The first half of his recital will feature performances of works by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Leo Brouwer, Antonio Lauro and Dominick Argento.

During the second half of the concert, Estel, accompanied by several other Wake Forest students, will perform some of his own works. These pieces will include the world premiere of his “Aria for Flute and Guitar,” which Estel will perform with junior Katharine Livingston on flute.

Estel is a two-time winner of the Christian Cappelluti Prize in Music. His compositions include two pieces for orchestra, one for a cappella chorus and numerous chamber and vocal works.

He was also recently named the first Jacob K. Javits Scholar for Wake Forest, a graduate fellowship given by the U.S. Department of Education that provides up to $176,000 in funding for four years of doctoral study.

The other students who will perform with him are junior Sasha Gee Enegren, bassoon; senior Ben Woodrow Giles, piano; senior Allison Jones, piano; junior Thomas Rutledge, percussion; sophomore Tamara Pickett, cello; and senior tenor Joseph Hipps.

On April 18 at 3 p.m., mezzo-soprano Rebecca Newby will perform her senior voice recital. Her repertoire will include selections by Haydn, Schubert, Rossini, Ernest Chausson and Leo Delibes.

Seniors Joseph Hipps, tenor, and Kate Roberts, soprano, will assist her. Thomas Turnbull will accompany on piano.
