Advisory: Media invited to celebration of Hispanic worship at WFU

A mariachi band, authentic Hispanic foods, a bilingual worship service and a celebration that draws on the experiences and traditions of members of Forsyth County’s growing Hispanic population are all planned starting at 5:30 p.m. today at Wake Forest University. Members of the media are invited to cover the first “Fiesta: A Celebration of Hispanic Hymnody and Worship Arts.”

The evening starts with the Wake Forest Museum of Anthropology’s exhibit “Dias de los Muertos” (“Days of the Dead”). A reception featuring traditional Hispanic food will start at 6 p.m. in the lower auditorium of Wake Forest’s Wingate Hall.

Media are encouraged to attend the 7 p.m. bilingual worship celebration in the university’s Wait Chapel, which features music by local Hispanic groups, and a sermon by Humberto Alfaro, professor of practical theology at New York Theological Seminary. Members of the local Hispanic community have helped organize the service and will lead readings and prayers along with Wake Forest students, staff and faculty. The mariachi band will lead a procession from the chapel to the university’s Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery after the service for the exhibit “Inside/Outside: Contemporary Cuban Art.”

Cameras may set up along the right stairway and balcony of the chapel. Media needing audio of the event should arrive at the chapel no later than 6:45 p.m. Media parking is available on both sides of the chapel in parking lots P and A. Marked media vehicles can park along the sidewalk in Lot N, between Poteat and Huffman residence halls, or Lot B, between Taylor and Davis residence halls.
