WFU students volunteer during spring breakBy Rachel Cook
Two Wake Forest University student groups will volunteer in Atlanta and New Orleans during spring break on March 8 March 16. Wake Forest students have been participating in such service trips, known as Wake Alternative Breaks, since 1995. Each trip is student-initiated and the cost per student is partially subsidized by the Wake Forest Volunteer Service Corps. [Wake Alternative Break] is a nice option for students who do not have time during the school year to volunteer, said Sally Sue Brown, coordinator of volunteer services at Wake Forest. This allows students to focus their energy without outside distractions. Both groups will consist of 10 to 12 students volunteering in various ways with local agencies from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day. The trips and daily activities are planned by student leaders who have participated in previous Wake Alternative Breaks. In Atlanta, the students will work with Hands on Atlanta. The trip will be led by In New Orleans, the students will work with Volunteers of America. The trip will be led by seniors Stephanie Plewes and Carolyn Conner.
