Documentaries by WFU graduate to be shown at university Feb. 5

Two documentary films directed by Wake Forest University graduate Matt Spangler will be shown Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Carswell Hall Room 111. The event is free and open to the public.

The first film, “Out of Obscurity: the Story of the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In,” chronicles one of America’s first civil rights sit-ins. The 40-minute film includes interviews with eyewitnesses and various civil rights scholars. It has aired on local public television stations and was awarded top prize for local cable productions by the Washington, D.C., chapter of the International Television and Video Association.

The second film, “One Man’s Home is a Castle,” tells the story of an eccentric man who builds a castle near Washington, D.C., in response to the dangers of contemporary American life. The 14-minute documentary short was one of five finalists in the Rosebud Film Festival in 2002.
