Wind ensemble concert to be held at WFU

Wake Forest University students and faculty and members of the Winston-Salem community will join together to present a wind ensemble concert Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall of the Scales Fine Arts Center at Wake Forest.

The concert will feature different styles of music. The program will include Eric Whitacre’s “Noisy Wheels of Joy,” selections from Julie Giroux’s “Culloden” and selections from Greg Danner’s “Country Dances.

“Noisy Wheels of Joy” is a comic operatic overture commissioned by the Band Composers Masterworks Consortium. The University of Nevada at Las Vegas Wind Symphony first performed the piece in March of 2002.

“Culloden” is a sampling of folk and Gaelic tunes from 18th century Scotland. For the work, Giroux unearthed forgotten songs, many the earlier forms of melodies that are known today such as “London Bridges,” “Yankee Doodle” and “Oh Susannah.”

“Country Dances” was inspired by the American tradition of contra dancing.
Contra dancing is related to square dancing, where any number of couples arranged in lines make up the dance.
