WFU remembers Sept. 11 with reading of victims’ names, interfaith service

Members of the media are invited to campus for Wake Forest University’s day-long commemoration of Sept. 11, “Remembering and Hoping.” All events are open to the public.

The day’s observances will begin on the steps of Wait Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Wake Forest President Thomas K. Hearn Jr. will offer a reflection and begin reading victims’ names. Students, faculty and staff will take turns reading names throughout the day. Flags representing victims’ countries will be displayed from the chapel.

At 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., the film “In Memoriam/New York City/September 11, 2001” will be shown in Benson University Center’s Pugh Auditorium. A blood drive will be held from 1-6 p.m. in Benson Center Room 401.

Student leaders from the Office of Volunteer Services will have a table set up on University Plaza (the Quad) throughout the day encouraging people to take the “Celebrating the American Spirit Service Pledge.” The Volunteer Service Corps will help connect volunteers with service opportunities in the community. Volunteers can designate their service pledge in honor of a specific Sept. 11 victim.

At 8 p.m., the university will host an interfaith worship service in Wait Chapel. Students, faculty and staff will offer reflections, including Associate Provost Sam Gladding, who counseled families in New York City following the attacks. The service will end with a candlelight vigil circling the Quad. WFDD (88.5 FM) will broadcast the service from 8-9 p.m.
