Film about Muslim women in the Middle East to be shown at WFU Nov. 13

"Covered: The Hijab in Cairo, Egypt," a film about Muslim women, will be shown at Wake Forest University on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in Carswell Hall, Room 111. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion given by Wake Forest faculty members.

The event is free and open to the public. It is part of the university's Year of Unity and Hope: Pro Humanitate at Work.

"Covered" was filmed in Egypt and was released in 1995 by director Tania Kamal-Eldin. The 25-minute film explains how Islamic tradition and religious fundamentalism are not the only reasons Muslim women wear veils. The film explains that diverse social, economic and political factors often play a part in that decision.

Panel participants will be Michaelle Browers, assistant professor of political science; Deepa Kumar, visiting instructor in the communication department; Ulrike Wiethaus, associate professor of humanities; and Cynthia Villagomez, assistant professor of history.
