This Landscape beloved and despised, continues regardless, 1989

Student Union Collection of Contemporary Art, 1997.7.1

Inspired by folk art, commercial advertising, and traditional ornamentation, Lari Pittman creates compositions full of fantasy, flamboyance, and hyper-stimulation. By juxtaposing Victorian images with the flatness of contemporary computer graphics in his screenprint This Landscape beloved and despised, continues regardless, Pittman depicts visually complex themes of romance, violence, and mortality. He states, “I’m interested in putting in my painting what isn’t supposed to be there.”
