What's Up with MOOCs?

You can't escape the conversations around MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) in higher ed these days, but what do we really know about them? A group of Wake Forest faculty and their students will offer their experiences and insights into MOOCs based on using them as part of their classes this spring. Reacting to the Past

Reacting to the Past (RTTP) consists of elaborate simulation exercises, set in the past, in which students take on roles informed by primary texts; conduct research into their characters; and present their ideas through oral argument and extensive written work in the context of game play. RTTP methods have been used around the US in science, social sciences, and humanities courses.This panel will feature Wake faculty who have experience with this innovative method for reanimating and facilitating students' active engagement with historical issues and texts. Disciplines represented will include political science, history, classical languages, and art.
Motivating Students: Engaging in Deep Learning

Students take their cues from us on how much and in what ways they will need to engage with the class material. Using the motivation framework from How Learning Works, we will examine ways in which we might be sending our students unintended messages that motivate surface learning strategies, and we will explore how to change our signals so that students go deeper.

TA and PostDoc Series: Teaching Portfolio 2: Refining Your Philosophy and Crafting a CV

During this second session, we’ll continue to build our portfolios. We’ll refine our teaching philosophies through the use of peer feedback from other attendees. You’ll also have the added benefit of viewing a variety of different types of philosophies through this process. Bring your completed teaching philosophy and a keen eye! And because many individuals include their CV in their portfolios, we’ll also spend some time discussing this very important document.
