DIRECTOR’S NOTES “The only politics
that can survive an encounter with this world, and still speak convincingly
of freedom and justice and democracy, is a politics that can encompass
both the harmonics and the dissonance. The frazzle, the rubbed raw,
the unresolved, the fragile and the fiery and the dangerous: These are
American things. This jangle is our movement forward, if we are to move
forward; it is our survival, if we are to survive.” I wish these passionate words, now almost ten years old, were only a reminder of a time when Kushner’s charges were necessary in and relevant to our country. Unfortunately, his appraisal of the tensions in America (and, alas, sometimes on our campus) seems prophetic. Yes, the millennium has arrived -- along with its hopes, its fears, its visions, and its darkness. What can this play say to us as we sit on the other side of the twentieth century? Quite a lot. I hope that this play challenges us to listen to one another, to talk with one another, to think and to laugh. To get angry? Perhaps. To test our pre-conceived notions? Absolutely. Isn’t that why we are here?    |
