Technology Guide - Using Windows XP

Logging In to WindowsXP

The ThinkPad’s operating system is Windows XP Pro, which allows users many ways to log on to the computer. To ensure you have access to all the network and local resources you need, make sure you always log on to the DEACNET domain, using your network login and password EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT ON CAMPUS. If you try to log on to anything other than DEACNET, you may experience problems, including the inability to log in at all, or the inability to access some resources.

Using Ctrl-Alt-Del in Windows XP
By pressing the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys on the ThinkPad, you can:
Lock Computer: This option blocks access to the ThinkPad by others until you log in again.
Log Off: Logs the current user off the ThinkPad and prompts for a new user to log on to the ThinkPad.
Shut Down: Closes all applications and turns off the ThinkPad.
Change Password: Prompts the user to re-enter their current password and enter the new password twice before completing the procedure. NOTE: Password changes can take up to an hour to reach all WFU systems.
Task Manager: Shows all programs currently running and their status. Can be used to terminate an application.
Cancel: Closes the window launched by Ctrl-Alt-Del without making any changes.
