Technology Guide - Using Windows XP

Logging In to WindowsXP

The computer is loaded with Windows XP, which is designed assuming a multi-user environment. Because of this, there are many ways to log into the computer. In order to ensure you have access to all the network and local resources you need, make sure you always log in to the DEACNET domain, using your network login and password EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT ON CAMPUS. If you try to log in to anything other than DEACNET, you may experience problems, including the inability to logon at all, or the inability to access some resources.

File Sharing in WindowsXP

By default on the R40, the Internet firewall is turned on. This may cause some problems with file sharing. In order to alleviate problems with file sharing, turn off the Internet firewall by:

  1. Right click on My Network Places.
  2. Go to Properties.
  3. Right click on Local Area Connection.
  4. Go to Properties.
  5. Click on the Advance tab.
  6. Uncheck box next to "Protect my computer and network...".
  7. Click OK.

Sharing a folder on the ThinkPad

File sharing on XP relies on the shared folder's security settings, rather than the sharing settings. By default, 'everyone' is the only user setup under the permissions button for the sharing tab. The user 'everyone' by default has full permissions, and should remain that way. This will not grant everyone full access to the ThinkPad.

All access permissions are set under the security tab. Once these are set, they override all sharing permissions. If the sharing permissions are altered, instead of the security settings, negative and unwanted results can occur. By default, only the local administrator, creator and system can see these shares. Other users can see the shared folder name, but cannot open the share to see the contents.

Creating a Shared Folder

  • Open My Computer, and double click on the C Drive:
  • Make a new folder or select the existing folder to share.
  • Right click on the folder and choose Sharing and Security.
  • Select Share this folder, and give it a name or use the default.
  • Select the Security tab.(By default, only the user logged in, creator owner, local administrator and system will have access to the share.)
  • To add other users, click Add and type in a valid username (e.g. smitab3).
  • After typing a username, select Check Names to verify it is correct and press OK.
  • The user is added to the share. Select permissions for this user, or accept the defaults.
  • If the user needs to modify, delete or edit the files, give them the Modify permission.
  • Select OK. The share and security should now exist. Note the hand icon under the folder to indicate the folder is shared.

Accessing a shared folder on another ThinkPad

Run prompt window
  • Click Start>Run
  • In the blank field type two back slashes + the name of the computer to access (same as login) + “-2003” for people with a ThinkPad R40 and "-pc" for people with a ThinkPad A30.
Example: if accessing smitab3's R40 ThinkPad, put \\smitab3-2003 in the field.
  • This will open a window and show the shared folders. Users only have access to folders shared to them.

Using Ctrl-Alt-Del in WindowsXP

By simultaneously pressing the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys on the ThinkPad keyboard, a dialog box will appear where users can:

Ctrlaltdel options
  • Lock Computer: This option blocks access to the ThinkPad by others until the user logs in again.
  • Log Off: Logs the current user off the ThinkPad and prompts for a new user to log into the ThinkPad.
  • Shut Down: Closes all applications and turns off the computer.
  • Change Password: This prompts the user to re-enter their current password and then enter the new password twice before completing the procedure. NOTE: Password changes can take up to an hour to propagate through all WFU systems.
  • Task Manager: Shows all programs currently running and their status. Can be used to terminate an application.
  • Cancel: Closes the window launched by Ctrl-Alt-Del without making any changes.
