Technology Guide - Virus Information

Protection

All R40 ThinkPads are loaded with Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. It will scan all files before they are created, opened, renamed, moved, copied, run, or saved. It can also help repair files if they become infected. A weekly scan for viruses will automatically run Tuesdays at 11am. It is important that you allow this scan to run to completion.

Prevention

Computer viruses can be spread through following methods:

  • E-mail messages and e-mail attachments
  • Downloading MP3s, movies, or other files through file-sharing programs
  • CD-Rs
  • Instant Messenger attachments
  • Sharing Files incorrectly

Think twice before opening e-mail attachments. People frequently get computer viruses from people they know. If you are unsure about an attachment, contact the sender and confirm that they did intend to send you the attachment before you open it. Scan all files downloaded from the Internet before using them.

Repair

If you believe the ThinkPad has become infected with a virus, scan all the files on the hard drive with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition. It will report if any files have been infected. You can also scan just a particular file as well. Please see the Frequently Asked Questions about Viruses below for instructions to scan for viruses. If you have any questions, contact the Help Desk at 758-HELP.

Extra Protection: All incoming WFU e-mail is scanned for viruses before it is delivered to you. In the event that you are sent an infected attachment, you and the sender will receive a message stating that the message will not be delivered. If you receive email notification that a virus infected message was not delivered to you, there is no further action required.
