Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQs)
about the ThinkPad Exchange
-
What if I don't return the ThinkPad during the scheduled exchange time?
Because the exchange schedule is related to the warranty expiration date
on the machines, failure to return the ThinkPad by the specified date may result
in the expiration of the warranty. Students may be liable for all repair costs
for the ThinkPad in this situation. Students may also be subject
to other consequences such as registration holds and suspension
of network access for failing to return the ThinkPad by the specified deadline.
Can I keep my current machine instead of turning
it in for a new model? No. The computer initiative at Wake Forest can
be most effective when all the members of each class are using the same model
of ThinkPad. Because of rapid advances in computing technology, it is in
the best interest of the student and Wake Forest University to exchange the old
model for a new one.
-
Can I buy
the ThinkPad I am currently using? No. The ThinkPad will be used for other
purposes.
-
What about the Hewlett-Packard
printer? You will NOT exchange the printer. The printer you have will remain
with you during your entire academic career.
The printer will remain
the property of the University until you graduate. If you leave Wake Forest University
for any reason other than graduation, you must return the printer to the Information
Systems Service Desk in good working condition. Although the printers
are not covered by the University's insurance, they do include a warranty. Printers
needing repairs due to a manufacturer's defect will be repaired or replaced at
no cost to you. Costs for printer repairs resulting from negligence or accidental
damage will be your responsibility.
If you have questions about the printer
or need assistance with repairs, contact the Information Systems Service Desk at
xHELP.
Transfers
and Withdrawals -
If I transferred to Wake Forest
as a sophomore and received a new ThinkPad at that time, do I still have to exchange
it for the new model now? Yes. The computer initiative at Wake Forest
can be most effective when all the members of each class are using the same model
of ThinkPad. This exchange provides the opportunity
to standardize computer hardware for members of your class.
-
What
if I'm not returning to Wake Forest University? If you are withdrawing, transferring,
or leaving the University for any reason, you must return the ThinkPad and the
printer to the Information Systems Department before you leave campus. To return
this equipment, take it to the Information Systems Service Desk in Information Systems
Building Room 256 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Information
Systems cannot sign your withdrawal form until you have returned this equipment.
Damaged & Missing Parts
-
The ThinkPad I'm using is dirty and has stickers and colored
pen markings on the case. Do I have to clean it? Personal identification
on the case is considered normal wear and tear. Although it is helpful if
you can remove the stickers, do not attempt to clean the ThinkPad by yourself. Cleaning
solvents, excessive water, and other methods may cause internal damage to the
ThinkPad.
-
What if parts of the ThinkPad are missing
or damaged? Each student is responsible for all the computer hardware for
the ThinkPad he/she received. If a part is missing or damaged, you must purchase
a replacement. For a list of parts and associated costs, see the parts and
price list for the T60
or R52
ThinkPad.
-
What if the display is cracked just a little
and it still works? What if a clip is broken on the ethernet or modem cable, but
the cable still works? Although the ThinkPad may still work under this condition,
this will not be considered intact and functional. Any part that is damaged will
result in a replacement charge. For a list of parts and associated costs, see
the parts and price lists for the T60 or R52 ThinkPad.
-
I never got all the parts when I first
received the ThinkPad. Am I responsible for replacing it? Unfortunately, the
answer to this is yes. When you received the ThinkPad, you received a checklist
of parts. Any missing parts not reported at that time will be your responsibility
at the time of the exchange.
-
What if one of my hardware
parts, like the modem cable, doesn't work? The ThinkPad warranty will coverpart failures resulting from manufacturer's defects. Part failures resulting
from user negligence (such as physical damage to a part) are not covered by warranty;
you will be responsible for purchasing a replacement part under such circumstances. Please
note that failure to exchange the ThinkPad during the normal exchange period may
result in the expiration of the warranty. Students may be responsible for
all repair costs in such a situation.
Theft
or Loss of the ThinkPad
Replacement parts
-
Where can I purchase a replacement part? You may purchase
replacement parts from the Information Systems Service Desk in the
Information Systems Building Room 256. Because the Service Desk stocks a limited
amount of parts, it's best to come in early, in case the part you need is not
in stock. In most cases, it takes at least one week to ship parts.
-
Can I purchase a part someplace else? Can I
use non-ThinkPad replacement parts? Students have the option of purchasing ThinkPad
parts from any authorized dealer. However, it is not
acceptable to install any non-ThinkPad hardware components in the Wake Forest
University ThinkPads.
