I have an IBM ThinkPad, but I don’t have a wireless card. How do I get one?
Wake Forest recommends IBM internal and external wireless cards for use with IBM ThinkPad computers. The University provides internal wireless cards beginning with the R40 ThinkPad. Students and staff with A20m, A21m and A30 models may purchase an external wireless card at the Information Systems Help Desk.
IBM wireless cards are available for purchase by staff and graduate students through Information Systems. Cost is $60, which includes installation. Installation includes configuring the laptop with software required for campus network security. Payment will be accepted through billing of the student account or departmental budget code.
To arrange for a wireless card installation, please contact the Help Desk at x4357. You may be required to leave the laptop overnight and no loaner ThinkPad will be available.

My computer is not an IBM computer. What wireless card should I get?
Information Systems recommends and supports only IBM cards. IBM CardBus network adapters and their associated software and drivers can be used in non-IBM laptops if the laptops support PCMCIA CardBus cards and the Windows XP operating system. If you choose not to use the recommended IBM CardBus network adapter, you may still connect to the campus network. In such cases Information Systems recommends purchasing a wireless card with the 802.11g specification in order to provide the best network coverage on campus. Please be aware, however, that users who choose cards other than the recommended IBM cards will have only guest access to University resources. Guest access will not include the ability to access many University services.

Can I share files over the new network?

-
Will everyone in my class be able to log on to the wireless network simultaneously?
Yes. Each wireless access point can handle 25 users at a time. Larger classrooms and campus spaces have more than one access point and/or an access point that can handle more users. If you have a particular concern, contact the Information Systems Help Desk at x4357 or E-mail Us.
