Wireless Cards

Next Generation Network
The Next Generation Network will:

  • Provide mobile computing for the entire Reynolda Campus
  • Enhance wired connectivity with an increased speed of 100 Mbps
  • Better equip Information Systems staff to target network problems
  • Allow Information Systems to pinpoint computing security threats

Recommended Wireless Cards
The University provides internal wireless cards beginning with the R40 ThinkPad. If you use an A20m, A21m or A30 model and are interested in enhancing your computing mobility,
Information Systems recommends purchasing from the Information Systems Help Desk one of the following wireless cards to take full advantage of the Next Generation Network.

  • The IBM 802.11 a/b/g external wireless card (PN 31P9101) for IBM A20m, A21m and A30 ThinkPads. Please note that there is a $60 charge for the card and installation, which includes configuring the laptop with software required for campus network security.
  • The internal IBM 802.11 a/b/g wireless card for the IBM R40. Please note that with faculty and student R40s, there is no charge for the internal wireless card.

Newly distributed IBM R51 ThinkPads are equipped with the internal 802.11g wireless card.

For users of other laptop computers:

  • Information Systems recommends purchasing a wireless card with the 802.11g specification in order to provide the best network coverage for your computer. Unfortunately, Information Systems will not be able to provide technical support for wireless cards not purchased through the Help Desk.

Cost of the Wireless Cards
Both recommended IBM wireless cards are available for purchase by staff and graduate students through Information Systems. Cost is $60, which includes installation. Installation includes configuring the laptop with software required for campus network security. Payment will be accepted through billing of the student account or departmental budget code.

Purchasing a Wireless Card
To arrange for a wireless card installation, please contact the Help Desk at x4357. You may be required to leave the laptop overnight and no loaner ThinkPad will be available. Cost of the card and installation is $60.
