About the Program
The Resident Technology Advisor (RTA) Program is for full-time students who assist the resident students in the effective use of computers. The RTAs report directly to the Manager of Information Systems Student Programs. They live in the residence halls and work closely with the Hall Directors and Resident Advisors. The RTAs answer questions and assist in solving computer-related problems. The RTAs are an integral part of Information Systems, as they assist in communicating important computer related issues to their residents. The specific qualifications, requirements and responsibilities for the RTA position are outlined below.
Time Commitment
The RTA position is the student’s principal non-classroom activity. Therefore:
|
Extracurricular activities should not conflict with the time needed to perform effectively as an RTA throughout the academic year. |
|
The RTA is expected to be available and accessible to the resident students throughout the year. |
Advising
The RTA should be aware of the students’ needs and provide appropriate assistance. The RTA is expected to:
|
Be accessible to residents by spending adequate time in the living area and posting a weekly schedule and hours available.
|
Take initiative to know the residents and to be considered approachable.
|
Keep oneself knowledgeable in the use of computers and, in particular, with any changes made to the use of computers on campus.
|
Provide awareness to residents regarding system alterations and updates from the Information Systems Department.
| | | |
Staff Training
The RTA will be trained on the current IBM Thinkpad model. They must keep themselves knowledgeable in the area of computer technology and its use. In addition, RTAs receive ongoing training training throughout the year, designed to develop skills needed to assist students. The RTA is expected to:
| Complete the two-day training held prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
|
RTA Housing Policy
RTAs are required to live on campus in the residence halls. The following procedures are to be followed:
|
RTAs in upper classman halls are required to go through the lottery system to acquire on-campus housing. RTAs assigned to freshmen halls have designated rooms. However, they are guaranteed housing in their assigned hall.
|
RTAs will occupy a room in the hall to which they are assigned. RTA rooms are structurally double rooms for freshmen halls, with a second RTA residing there as well. RTAs do not receive any special room rent rates while employed.
|
Being terminated from the RTA position does not relinquish your obligation to campus housing. Once the Housing Agreement is signed, you have committed yourself to campus housing for the entire academic year.
| | |
Compensation
Compensation will be in the form of a monthly stipend totaling $3600 per academic year. If for any reason an RTA is dismissed from his/her duties as an RTA, the stipends will not be forthcoming.
The Resident Technology Advisor position is a one academic year commitment. Re-appointment is not guaranteed, but is based upon an exemplary performance record. The RTAs performance is under continuous evaluation. Failure to meet any of the qualifications, requirements or responsibilities listed in this agreement or specified by the Manager of Information Systems Student Programs may result in personnel sanctions which could include, but not be limited to, verbal or written warnings, probation or possible termination.
