Leadership Opportunities:
ISSP offers students a wide array of opportunities to adopt and apply leadership skills. Many of the programs have members who are assigned managerial responsibilities. These students help supervise their peers, plan events, and disseminate information.
Pay:
The rate of pay depends on the student’s experience and time in the program. Students who hold leadership positions have the opportunity to receive a higher pay rate.
Internships:
ISSP helps to pair students with internship opportunities at for-profit and non-profit organizations locally and nationwide. The positions tend to be very competitive. Students are required to create a professional resume to be considered for these positions. While ISSP assists with this process, each organization does its own interviewing and hiring of the positions.
Exposure:
ISSP students have many opportunities to network and meet others, both on and off-campus. Students are often asked to speak to incoming freshmen, current students, visitors of the University, staff/faculty from other schools and corporate partners of the University. Some students provide services to businesses and organizations in the community, allowing them to become familiar with the business world. ISSP is a great opportunity to get to know others in the community and network for employment opportunities after graduation.
Special Projects: ISSP students receive many opportunities to work additional hours on a contract basis. These positions typically range from 2-10 hours and are paid directly by the client at an increased hourly rate.
Relationships:
There are several professional IS staff that directly supervise students. It is their job to help these students grow and learn throughout their time at Wake Forest. The staff is dedicated to helping these students not only in their current positions, but juggling college life and struggles.
Use of Lounge and Equipment:
Students have 24-hour access to a lounge in the IS department. The lounge includes several computer workstations, multimedia equipment, access to software, multiple subscriptions to current periodicals, and comfortable furniture. In addition to the technology, the lounge is stocked with snacks and drinks for late night projects or studying.
Résumé Building:
Any involvement with ISSP looks great on a resume. There is no doubt that employers are impressed with the students’ skills and abilities that are learned within ISSP. History has proven that employers look favorably on the experience and exposure students receive while working within these programs.
