Student Interns
The Wake Forest University Sports Medicine Department offers practical experience to a limited number of students interested in allied health care fields. The WFU Sports Medicine Department consists of a team Certified Athletic Trainers. They are responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Student Interns work with Certified Athletic Trainers to provide general health care to all varsity athletic teams at Wake Forest University . Due to changes in educational standards by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, Wake Forest University can no longer offer a direct route to athletic training certification. The Student Interns at Wake Forest University serve as an invaluable resource to the professional staff. The students, with their dedication and many hours of hard work, help to provide the highest quality of care for our student athletes. Student Interns working in the Sports Medicine Department have the experience of working with a wide variety of men's and women's sports. The majority of our Students Interns begin their experience in the athletic training room and their initial project is to observe and interact with the professional staff and other students in order to make themselves both knowledgeable and comfortable with the procedures set forth by the Sports Medicine staff.
Student Interns work on a daily basis under the supervision of the athletic training staff to assist with the care of the student athletes. They are given opportunities to interact with the athletes, and provide assistance with the treatment of injuries. Student Interns assist with pre and post-practice treatments, practice coverage, first aid and all other team needs. Student Interns also have the opportunity to observe and be involved with all aspects of the sports medicine coverage provided at WFU.
Students new to the program will work approximately 10 hours a week. Advanced interns or interns working with the football team may work approximately 20 hours a week and may travel with various teams. The experiences gained as part of the Sports Medicine staff are ones that will be with them for many years after graduation.
