New Haven

19th Century Engravings

New Haven was surrounded by a lush forest which penetrated into the heart of its central squares. By the early nineteenth century the place was know as "City of Elms" because its trees filled the green and lined its major streets. These four images are nineteenth century engravings and photographs of the green, of views going away from the green up Temple and Church Streets, and of Elm Street just off the green.
