Whether as beneficiaries or victims, both Yale and New Haven are living museums to successive attempts by American elites to design buildings that signify and urban space that is valued. In the contest between whether buildings signify democratic community or elite power, and whether what is valued about space is pubic use or market value, the men of property have won most rounds.
