Shopping Malls

The Mauling of America

Minneapolis has twice taken the lead in mall innovations. Before the present Mall of America, it hosted in its suburb of Edina in 1956, the first fully enclosed and climate controlled mall, Southdale. With its center piece atrium, the Garden Court of Perpetual Spring, temperature controlled at 72 degrees, and careful manipulation of light and space, it was a simulacrum of an ideal market square.
