Shopping Malls

The Mauling of America

Families can spend money on extras in fast-food halls, amusement arcades, kiddy rides, and other recreations, without ever actually being in places for spontaneous sociability. The poor are eliminated as loiters, and those who attempt to engage in political dialogue are reminded by armed security guards of Supreme Court rulings that malls are private property, not public space. The bill of rights does not apply here, "no free speech please, we're shopping."
