Honors Program
To be graduated with the designation “Honors in Sociology,” highly qualified majors are invited to apply to the department for admission to the Honors Program during the spring semester of the junior year. Students admitted to the Honors Program must have a 3.0 GPA overall and a 3.3 GPA in the major at the end of the junior year and maintain those GPAs through graduation.
Students in the Honors Program must enroll in two courses: Sociology 373 (Honors Seminar) with the Honors Director in the fall semester and Sociology 397 (Honors Individual Study) with their thesis advisor in the spring semester. Honors students must conduct an original research project, document their research in a written thesis, and satisfactorily defend their work in an oral examination.
For majors intending to pursue honors in sociology, Sociology 270, 271 and 272 are recommended prior to Sociology 373.
