Senior Faculty Awards and Fellowships in the Mathematical, Natural, and Physical Sciences

American Philosophical Society, Franklin Research Grants - up to $6K per year; grants made payable to individual applicant and are taxable to the recipient. Deadlines: October 1 and December 1.

Institute of International Education, Council for International Exchange of Scholars. Deadlines vary.

  • Fulbright Alumni Initiatives Awards –small institutional grants to Fulbright alumni to continue or develop projects that will link their home and host institutions;
  • Fulbright Distinguished Chairs – among the most prestigious appointments; most in western Europe; a few in Canada and Russia;
  • Fulbright International Education Administrators – 2-3 week summer seminars in Germany, Japan, or Korea;
  • Fulbright New Century Scholars – 30 top academics and professionals collaborate for a year on a topic of global significance;
  • Visiting Scholar Occasional Lecturer Program –support for scholars and professionals already in the US on Fulbright grants to visit other campuses to deliver guest lectures;
  • Fulbright Scholar Program –sends 800 US faculty and professionals abroad to 140 countries each year for 2-9 months; grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields; Deadline: 1 August annually.
  • Fulbright Scholars-in-Residence – brings visiting scholars and professionals from abroad to lecture at US colleges and universities for one semester or one academic year;
  • Fulbright Specialists – short-term grants of 2-6 weeks to collaborate on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and other activities;
  • Fulbright Visiting Non-US Scholar Program – for non-US scholars interested in applying for research/lecturing grants in the US

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science

  • Long-term Invitation Fellowship Program - allows researchers employed at designated Japanese research institutions to invite researchers from other countries to Japan to participate in cooperative activities in all fields of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences for 2-10 months; candidates must have held a PhD for over 6 years or be full, associate, or assistant professors or research associates; includes round-trip air ticket, monthly maintenance allowance of 369,000 yen, domestic research travel allowance of 100,000 yen, research expenses of 40,000 yen and overseas travel accident and sickness insurance coverage; the host receives a cooperation allowance of 50,000 yen; applications must be submitted by the Japanese host through the head of their university or institution; foreign scientists wishing to participate are advised to establish contact with a Japanese or foreign-resident researcher in their field and ask them to submit an application. Deadline: 3 September 2010.
  • Short-term Invitation Fellowship Program - allows researchers employed at designated Japanese research institutions and laboratories to invite fellow researchers from other countries to Japan to participate in discussions, attend seminars, or give lectures in all fields of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences; open to senior scientists, university professors, and others with substantial professional experience; 14-60 day awards include round-trip air travel, a daily maintenance allowance of 18,000 yen, domestic research travel allowance of 150,000 yen and a host's cooperation allowance of 50,000 yen. Deadline: 3 September 2010; 12 May 2011.

Langlois Foundation for Art, Science, and Technology, Researchers in Residence - 2 grants/year of $5K + living and research expenses of up to $10K + supplementary funds of up to $10K to enable researchers to work for 2-3 months in the foundation's collections at the Centre for Research and Documentation in Montreal; open to historians, curators, critics, independent researchers, artists, designers, and computer specialists; must have extensive research experience and pertinent academic and professional knowledge of art, science, and technology, supported by published articles and conference communications; must focus on one or both of the following research areas: CR+D documentation collection and archival funds; information architecture and electronic publishing Deadline: not currently accepting applications.

National Research Council, Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships - 20 1-year awards of $40K and an employing institution allowance of $1,500 to Alaska Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Black or African Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos, Native Americans, Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesian or Micronesian), and Puerto Ricans for research in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, engineering, life sciences, mathematics, physics. Deadline: 8 November 2010.

National Security Agency, Mathematical Sciences Program, Senior Investigator Grants - to support mathematical scientists who have demonstrated their effectiveness in supervising graduate students and are actively pursuing research in algebra, number theory, discrete mathematics, probability, and statistics; provides partial support for up to 2 graduate students; travel for the PI and graduate students, equipment, other miscellaneous expenses. Deadline: October 15.
