OFFICE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND LIBERAL ARTS
Betsy Gatewood
PFI: Creating Academic Community Parternerships: Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship in a Liberal Arts in a Liberal Arts Institution
Awarded $596,679 for the period 12/15/07 to 11/30/10
Source: National Science Foundation
This program will develop a model for creative partnerships between liberal arts institutions and local entrepreneurs. It links Wake Forest University to two major regional initiatives, one in the life sciences (biotech, medical devices, and related imaging and information sciences) and the other in design (entertainment, life science, education, and product marketing). Partner organizations include the Center for Design Innovation; Greater Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce; Idealliance (Piedmont Triad Research Park); Inception Micro Angel Fund (IMAF); North Carolina Biotechnology Center; North Carolina Small Business Technology Development Center; Piedmont Angel Network (PAN); and Piedmont Triad Entrepreneurs Network (PTEN). Building on existing coursework, this program will catalyze a self-sustaining learning community for innovation through 7 extracurricular components: workshops for Wake Forest and other college and university students; a mentoring program with local entrepreneurs and organizations; liberal arts model development; market research; experiential learning internships; Fifth-Year Institute awards; and an Entrepreneurship in Liberal Education Conference. The project aims to create not only economic, but also artistic, intellectual, and social value.
