American Association of University Women, International Fellowships - awarded for full-time study or research in the US to women who are not US citizens or permanent residents; several fellowships are also available for study outside the US for members of the International Federation of University Women; masters or professional fellowships at $18K; doctorate fellowships at $20K; postdoctoral fellowships at $30K; must have completed at least a bachelors degree from a US college or university by September 1, 2009. American Cancer Society, Research Scholar Grants in Basic, Preclinical, Clinical, and Epidemiology Research - Support for faculty in the first 6 years of their appointment for investigator-initiated research projects in basic, preclinical, clinical and epidemiology research. The maximum award is for 4 years and for $200,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs. Deadline: April 1 and October 15 annually. American Chemical Society (ACS), Petroleum Research Fund (PRF) Doctoral New Investigator Grants (DNI) - provides $100K over 2 years in start-up funding for new faculty who are within the first three years of their first academic appointment and have limited or no preliminary results for a research project. DNI grants are to be used to illustrate proof of principle or concept, to test a hypothesis, or to demonstrate feasibility of an approach. Deadline: The next application window opens October 30, 2009. American Diabetes Association, Career Development Awards - up to $150K per year for up to 5 years; additional $25K stipend the first two years for additional equipment; to assist promising new investigators in establishing their independence in diabetes-related research. Deadlines: January 15, 2010 for July 1, 2010 funding; July 1, 2010 for January 1, 2011 funding. American Diabetes Association, Junior Faculty Awards - $120K per year for up to 3 years to support new investigators establishing their independence in diabetes research; up to $10K per year towards repayment of principal on loans for PhD, MD, or DPM. Deadlines: January 15, 2010 for July 1, 2010 funding; July 1, 2010 for January 1, 2011 funding. American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR), AFAR Research Grants - $60K for 1-2 years to junior faculty to do research that will serve as the basis for longer term research efforts. Deadline: December 15, 2009. American Heart Association, National Scientist Development Grant - up to $77K annual for faculty within 4 years of their first appointment at the assistant professor level; faculty with current or prior funding for more than 1 year at a level greater than $95K per year in direct costs are not eligible. Deadline: January 22, 2010. American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate Beginning Grant-in-Aid- $154K for 2 years to assistant professors who are receiving research support of $200K or less (direct costs) per year; have received no more than 1 other Beginning Grant-in-Aid award and do not have active funding from the association. Deadline: January 13, 2010. American Philosophical Society, Franklin Research Grants - up to $6K per year; grants made payable to individual applicant and are taxable to the recipient. Army Research Laboratories Young Investigator Program (YIP) (refer to ARL/ARO BAA page 114) - up to $50K per year for 3 years; Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) awards not to exceed $200K per year for 5 years to attract outstanding young faculty to Army research, support research and teaching; YIP proposals may be considered for PECASE award. Army Research Office Young Investigator Program (YIP) - (refer to ARL/ARO BAA page 114) up to $50K per year for 3 years; PECASE awards not to exceed $200K per year for 5 years to attract outstanding young faculty to Army research, support research and teaching; YIP proposals may be considered for PECASE award. Beckman Foundation, Beckman Young Investigators Program - ~$300K over term of project, normally 3 years, to tenure-track faculty in chemistry and the life sciences, broadly defined. Faculty must be within first 3 years of 1st tenure-track appointment. Deadline: Not currently accepting applications. Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, New Faculty Awards Program - $50K unrestricted research grant to new Chemistry Department faculty in the 1st year of 1st tenure-track appointment. Deadline: Suspended until further notice. Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Teacher-Scholar Awards - a $60K unrestricted research grant to full time tenure-track Chemistry faculty within 1st 5 years of independent academic careers. Deadline: August 5, 2010. David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Fellowships for Science and Engineering - $875K over 5 years to faculty members engaged in research in natural and physical sciences and within first 3 years of their faculty careers. Deadline for 2 nominations by the President: Nomination requests are sent in January. Institute of International Education, Council for International Exchange of Scholars Deadlines vary. IBM, Herman Goldstine Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship - for research in mathematical and computer sciences; provides scientists of outstanding ability an opportunity to advance scholarship as resident department members at the Research Center. Usually, 1 award per year to candidates receiving PhD after September 2004. Stipend between $95,000 and $115,000, depending on area and length of experience; additional allowance for moving expenses. Deadline: Applications accepted October 26, 2009 - January 6, 2010. Leukemia Research Foundation, New Investigator Research Grants - $100K to support young investigators for new, previously unfunded projects in leukemia and related areas; grants are for up to 1-year. Deadline: TBA in 2010. National Institutes of Health Career Transition Awards - support for an individual postdoctoral fellow in transition to a faculty position. National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute Transition Career Development Award to Promote Diversity - promotes the diversification of the cancer research workforce via facilitation of the transition of investigators from minority groups underrepresented in biomedical research working in the areas of cancer prevention, control, behavioral, or population science research, from the mentored stage of career development in academic cancer research to the independent stage. National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Harry Weaver Neuroscience Scholar Awards - 2-year awards of $30K in 1st year, increasing to $40K in last year; applicant must have PhD for not more than 5 years with sufficient postdoctoral training to accomplish independent research; assistant professor at approved US university. National Research Council, Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships - 20 1-year awards of $40K and an employing institution allowance of $1,500 to Alaska Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Black or African Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos, Native Americans, Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesian or Micronesian), and Puerto Ricans for research in American studies, anthropology, archaeology, art and theater history, astronomy, chemistry, communications, computer science, earth sciences, economics, education, engineering, ethnomusicology, geography, history, international relations, language, life sciences, linguistics, literature, mathematics, performance study, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, urban planning, women’s studies, interdisciplinary ethnic studies programs, area studies, peace studies, and social justice. National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program - $400K for 5 years (Biology only - $500K for 5 years); prestigious award for new faculty; teacher/scholars selected for creative plans integrating research and education within context of institution's mission. National Science Foundation, Mathematical Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowships - 30-35 awards/year of $135K over 4 years to US citizens, nationals, or legal residents who have not held the PhD for more than 2 years as of 1 January the year of the award and have not received a federal research grant for research in the mathematical sciences, including applications to other disciplines. Deadline: October 10, 2010. National Security Agency, Mathematical Sciences Program, Young Investigators Grant - $15K per year for 2 years to promising investigators within 10 years of receiving their PhD; must be US citizens or permanent residents. Deadline: October 15. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards - $5K in seed money to enrich research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities. Full time assistant professors within 2 years of their initial tenure-track appointment are eligible. Nominations made by institutional ORAU Councilors and limited to 2 applications per member institution. Applicant’s institution required to match award with at least additional $5000. Deadline: February 5, 2010. Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program (YIP) - $100K per year for 3 years with possibility of greater support for equipment or for additional collaborative research with Navy lab to young academic scientists who promise creative research and teaching in ONR areas of interest. Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences - $70K per year for 4 years designed to support young investigators of outstanding promise in the basic and clinical sciences relevant to the advancement of human health. Must be assistant professor or independent researcher and must not have been in such an appointment for more than 3 years total (including employment at other institution). Deadline: November 2, 2009. Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America Foundation, Inc., Research Starter Grants in Informatics - $60K per year for 1 year to support faculty starting independent research careers integrating cutting edge information technology with advanced biological, chemical, and pharmacological sciences; e.g., molecular genetics, medical; genomics; proteomics; and biological pathways. Deadline: September 1, 2009. Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America Foundation, Inc., Research Starter Grants in Toxicology - $60K per year for 1 year to support individuals beginning independent research careers at faculty level; areas of interest: pharmacology, pharmacology-morphology, clinical pharmacology, and drug toxicology. Deadline: September 1, 2009. Research Corporation, Cottrell Scholar Awards - $100K for tenure-track beginning faculty members whose primary appointment is in a Ph.D.-granting department of astronomy, chemistry, or physics. Eligibility limited to those in 3rd year of 1st tenure-track position during calendar year of application. Deadline: First business day in April. Searle Scholars Program - $100K per year for 3 years to assistant professors in 1st or 2nd year of tenure-track appointment who are pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences. Nomination deadline: September 25, 2009. Sigma Delta Epsilon/Graduate Women in Science, Inc., Fellowships - for female faculty engaged in early-stage academic research. The applicant must also be a member of SDE/GWIS. Deadline: January 15 annually.
Sloan Foundation Research Fellowships - $45K for 2 years to tenure-track faculty no more than 6 years removed from completing PhD. Awards are made in chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, physics, related field in the biological sciences, and related interdisciplinary fields. Deadline for nominations by department chairs: September 15, 2009. United States - Israel Binational Science Foundation, Start-Up Grant - up to $45K for 2-year program to support 1st investigative efforts in a variety of fields for 18 months; final 6 months must have home institution support. Applicants must be within 7 years of receiving their PhD. Deadline: mid-November annually. USDA, CSREES National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program, Agricultural Research Enhancement Awards, New Investigator Awards - research awards for new investigators (those beginning research career without extensive research publication record, and less than 5 years' postgraduate, career-track research experience).
