The cost does not include airfare, overnight stay in Miami, visa, course materials, inter-city travel or third meals. International Studies Office has scholarships and travel grants available for Wake Forest Students. Students are encouraged to seek a variety of funding sources.

Enrollment: Two Spanish courses beyond the 213 Spanish basic language level, preferably Advanced Grammar and Composition, and/or Conversation (or students must show proficiency in the language). Students from other universities may receive transfer credit. All participants are subject to approval by the U.S. Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Government.

Courses Offered: Cuban Literature and Afro-Cuban Cultural Expressions. Wake Forest University's program provides an opportunity to study Cuban literature and the History of Afro-Cuban culture (with emphasis on religious expression) taught by professors of the University of Havana. Students attend the two classes for a total of eight credits. Courses count for credits toward a Spanish major or minor. Graduate students are welcome to apply.

Weekend Excursions and Day Outings: The group travels to Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, and Varadero. Students also have access to many exciting areas of Havana, including Old Havana and the financial and commercial district in Miramar. Both Trinidad and Old Havana are UNESCO-declared World Heritage Sites. As part of the Afro-Cuban Culture course, students have some afternoon field trips to sites such as old coffee plantations, churches, and religious temples. Organized group outings introduce students to the world of Cuban dance performances, concerts, plays, etc.
Community Workshops: The U of Havana and Wake Forest U have workshops for participating American students. Several times a week, our students team up with U of Havana students and Havana's school children and work together to learn about Cuban culture and the historical and architectural surroundings of Old Havana.

Lodging: Participants reside at the Hotel Vedado in the center of Havana. This modest, cozy, air-conditioned hotel has a pool and is located just six blocks from the north side of the campus. El Hotel Vedado is conveniently close to major movie theaters, exquisite restaurants, splendid museums, and other significant cultural institutions.
