credits toward a Spanish major or minor. Graduate students are welcome
to apply.
Weekend Excursions and Day Outings: The group travels to Trinidad, Cienfuegos,
Matanzas, and Varadero. Students also have access to many exciting areas
of Havana, including Old Havana and the financial and commercial district
in Miramar. Both Trinidad and Old Havana are UNESCO-declared World Heritage
Sites. As part of the Afro-Cuban Culture course, students have some afternoon
field trips to sites such as old coffee plantations, churches, and religious
temples. Organized group outings introduce students to the world of Cuban
dance performances, concerts, plays, etc.
Community Workshops: The U of Havana and Wake Forest U have workshops
for participating American students. Several times a week, our students
team up with U of Havana students and Havana's school children and work
together to learn about Cuban culture and the historical and architectural
surroundings of Old Havana.
Lodging: Participants reside at the Hotel Vedado in the center of Havana.
This modest, cozy, air-conditioned hotel has a pool and is located just
six blocks from the north side of the campus. El Hotel Vedado is conveniently
close to major movie theaters, exquisite restaurants, splendid museums,
and other significant cultural institutions.
