Spanish for Business

This is a special track for students majoring in Business, Finance, International Relations, etc., who would like to obtain a Certificate in Spanish for Business. This Certificate requires a total of 15 hours above SPN 212/213, and includes the following courses:

1. SPN 319 (Formerly SPA 219):Composition and Review of Grammar. 3 h.

2. SPN 387 (Formerly SPA 329): Introduction to Spanish for Business. 3 h.

3. SPN 388 (Formerly SPA 330): Advanced Spanish for Business. 3 h.

4. SPN/SPA 381: Spanish Translation 3 h.

5. Elective: Any Spanish literature or culture course above 212/213 (not including 219/319, 220/316). 3 h.

 

SPN 389 (Formerly SPA 385), Business Spanish Internship, is strongly recommended.

(SPN 387I or SPA 3289 may be substituted for either SPN 387 or SPN 388)

Course descriptions:

SPN 387. Introduction to Spanish for Business. (3h) Introduction to Spanish vocabulary and discourse in business. This course emphasizes oral and written practices, reading, and Hispanic business culture, as well as a comprehensive analysis of different business topics and areas. Same as SPA 329. P—SPN 319 or SPA 219 or POI.

SPN 388. Advanced Spanish for Business. (3h) Intensive immersion in the situations and skills of advanced Spanish for business. Emphasis on oral and written business presentations and reading comprehension of case studies related to the Hispanic business world. Cross-cultural awareness of the Hispanic business world. Same as SPA 330. P—SPN 387 or SPA 320 or POI.

SPN 381. Spanish Translation. (3h) Introduction to translation strategies through practice, with emphasis on Spanish to English. Focus is on translating in domains such as social science, computing, economics, the entertainment industry, banking, and journalism. P—SPN 324 or SPA 380 or POI.
