Graduate Reading Exam in Romance Languages
Graduate students who need to take the Graduate Reading Exam in one of the Romance Languages (French, Italian, Spanish) have two options:
- Enroll in FRH 197/ITA 197/SPA 197. Reading Knowledge. (1.5h) Review of essential French/Italian/Spanish grammar, usage, vocabulary and processing strategies for reading various types of literary, social science and technical publications for content. Designed for students interested mainly in strengthening reading proficiency in the language, and aimed at preparing students to take the graduate reading exam administered at the end of the course. P-Intermediate French/Italian/Spanish or its equivalent, and placement exam. Pass/fail only. Undergraduate credit given. Offered only in the first half of the semester
The 197 instructor will administer and grade the reading exam for his or her class. The P/F grade on the exam determines whether the student passes or fails the exam, and the class. The exam will consist of a text to translate plus a section or sections consisting of a reading with comprehension questions. Readings will be of two types, one fiction (a narrative piece from a novel or short story), and the other non-fiction (an excerpt from a scholarly article, from example).
- Take the Graduate Reading Exam outside of the 197 system: If the student opts for this route, the appropriate language representative in Romance Languages will administer and grade the exam, which will be of the type suggested for use in 197.
An Alternative:
- To fulfill their reading proficiency requirement in Romance languages students are still allowed to pass 213/215 with a B.
