The minor in Latin American studies provides an opportunity for students to undertake a multidisciplinary study of the history, geography, economics, politics, and culture of Latin America and the Caribbean. It consists of a total of fifteen hours, only three of which may count toward the student's major.
Candidates for the minor are required to take Latin American Studies 210, Introduction to Latin American Studies. In addition, candidates must elect at least twelve hours of coursework on Latin America. No more than six of these twelve hours may be in a single discipline.
Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese either by completing Spanish courses through the 213 level or by undergoing an oral proficiency interview with a member of the faculty of the Department of Romance Languages.
