The Intensive Summer Language Institute, or ISLI, on the Wake Forest University campus offers Spanish 153S and Spanish 212 during the First Summer Term. SPA 153S is an accelerated five-week course in an immersion setting. It aims particularly to meet the needs of students who wish to develop a greater confidence in Spanish fast. Spanish 212 fulfills the University's foreign language requirement in Spanish. It's an Exploration of significant cultural expressions from the Spanish-speaking world.

Purpose

Students develop intermediate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They are also able to fulfill their foreign language requirement in record time. Through immersion in language and cultural experiences, students develop greater confidence and improve their listening and speaking skills. A high faculty:student ratio, with three instructors and never more than ten students per class, allows for highly individualized instruction and a very successful atmosphere for learning.

Equivalence

Students may receive credit for SPS 153S in lieu of, but not in addition to, other 153 courses (Spanish 153, 153x, or 153E).

Prerequisites

Due to the intensive nature of the program, only SPA 111 (or equivalent) is a prerequisite, though Spa 112 (or equivalent) is highly recommended. Permission of instructor is also acceptable.

Requirements

Requirements include daily classes, six hours per day; one-hour daily lunches with instructors in the target language; two-hour extra-curricular activities two evenings per week; two Saturday mornings; pledge to speak the target language. Possible housing in a language designated dorm. IBM laptops and a WFU internet account are also required.
