The Apache Reservation

Mission Statement
 
The mission of the Feather & Stone Exchange is to foster a cultural and educational exchange for the mutual benefit of those persons on or associated with the San Carlos Apache Reservation in San Carlos, Arizona and non-native peoples in Winston-Salem, NC (specifically those at Wake Forest University).
   
 
Objectives
 
Objectives include, but are not limited to the following: (1) Engaging Apache students in summer academic and athletic camps; (2) Offering a premier service-learning initiative for Wake Forest Students who may be unable to travel during the academic year; (3) Creating space for diverse Wake Forest groups to engage one another in a setting (the Apache Reservation) that encourages identity development; (4) Building the beginnings of support networks for Apache Youth who might eventually matriculate into colleges/universities in the Winston-Salem area; (5) Creating opportunities for Apache Tribal Leaders and Members to interact with the Wake Forest University campus and community groups (on site and otherwise); and (6) Provide university resources for tribal planning in such areas as education, economic development and health care.
   
 
Summer Service Learning Trip
 
A significant annual program of the Exchange is a week-long summer experience that will involve a delegation from Wake Forest. Ten to twelve Wake students, faculty and staff will travel to San Carlos June 18-25, 2007. While there, we will have opportunities to learn about aspects of the cultural, social, economic, and political life of the Apache people, offer sports and academic clinics for the young people, and explore ways to deepen the relationship between the university and the Reservation.
Trip Itinerary
  • Two days of pre-tip preparation at WFU
  • Orientation by and engagement with the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council
  • Guided exploration of life on the Apache Reservation
  • Sports camp with Apache youth
  • Detention Center experience
  • Excusion to local college/university including college prep session for Apache youth
  • Daily intentional reflection and free time
