biden at wakeAs part of the Alumni Office’s Back to the Classroom Event at Homecoming, Professors Dinan, Harriger, and Smith participated on a panel discussion analyzing the outcome of the 2008 presidential election.  The panel was followed by a reception hosted by the department for its alumni.  In late January and February we organized a speakers series entitled “Challenges Facing the New President” which included a panel of faculty discussing key policy challenges (and included our professors Coates and Kennedy), a talk by Stephen Hess of the Brookings Institute entitled “The Obama Transition:  Hitting the Ground Running”, a panel of students from various party perspectives entitled “Looking to the Future:  Will Young People Stay Involved?”, and the Voices of our Times lecture by David Gergen entitled “David Gergen on the New American President.”

We also served as the departmental host for a visit by Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Loch Johnson, Regents Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia.  In addition to organizing and co-sponsoring his public talk entitled “The 9/11 Attacks, Iraqi WMDs and the Decline and Fall of the CIA,” he lectured in two classes, met with students informally over lunch and coffee, and went out to dinner with six of our majors who were also members of Phi Beta Kappa.
