Political
scientists who study Latin America spent much of the 1980’s
and 1990’s analyzing democratic transitions.
With the consolidation of democratic regimes across the
region, scholars recently turned
their attention to the actual processes of democratic politics,
and in particular, democratic institutions, in order to
analyze the actual functioning of democratic systems in
Latin America.
The research symposium “Pathways to Power: Political Recruitment
and Democracy in Latin America” will bring together a group
of leading scholars working in the institutional tradition in
an attempt to fill a gap in our understanding of political recruitment
in the Americas. In doing so, it will help redirect scholarship
toward a sharper understanding of the incentives shaping political
choice that are tied to processes of political recruitment in
the region. The research symposium will take place on April 3 & 4,
2004 at the Graylyn International Conference Center of
Wake Forest University. |
