What is Operation Identification?
Operation ID is a nationwide program designed to discourage burglary and theft of valuables. It also provides a way for you to easily identify stolen property, and increases law enforcement's chances of recovery and conviction.
Most burglars steal valuables for resale. But if you mark all items with permanent identification numbers, the burglar may be unable to sell them. If a criminal knows all your valuables are marked, he or she will look for easier and more profitable victims.
How Do I Join Operation ID?
- You may borrow an engraving tool from your residence hall director or University Police by leaving your student identification card until you return the engraver. These engravers also are available at hardware stores. Use the engraver to etch your driver's license number and state abbreviation onto your valuables
- List any items you engrave on the Operation ID form below and submit to the University Police. You may wish to make a copy for your parents to keep on file at your permanent address.
- Identifying marks should be placed on clothing, jewelry, and other items that may be damaged by engraving. Permanent marking pens are available at University Police.
- If you have access to a video camera/recorder, tape your valuables and zoom in on serial numbers.
- Register your bicycle in our bike registration program. There is no charge for registration.

Operation ID Instructions
Engrave personal property with your driver's license number prefixed by the two-letter state abbreviation. Do not use your Social Security number unless it is the same as your driver's license number - this number cannot be traced by law enforcement agencies to determine ownership.
Examples of engraving procedure:
NC 123456;CA 123456789; etc.
When engraving, hold the tool straight up, not at a slant.
Submit this form to the University Police for filing.
