Please report any suspicious persons or activity to the University Police at 911 (from a campus phone) immediately.
To help prevent this type of crime, follow the below listed tips:
Park in a well lit well traveled area if possible.
Always maintain security of vehicle keys.
Do not leave anything of value in your vehicle in plain view.
Always lock your vehicle doors.
Be extra careful to remove all items of value and secure your vehicle.

Crime Alert for February 28, 2005
REPEATING INCIDENT
Over the past few months an individual from Israel has called numerous individuals and departments on campus complaining about the University, making bomb threats, cursing and making threats against the person being called or their family. This individual was deported from the United States. Despite involvement in the investigation of these incidents by the FBI and Israel Police these calls have resumed. If you receive a call from this person who may identify himself as Eli Avarahani or a collect call from overseas hang up and do not answer when he calls back. Below are some tips for handling harassing phone calls.
- Your telephone is for your use and service; always use it on your own terms. If the caller does not speak or if you simply don’t feel comfortable talking to the caller, hang up. Remember that the telephone is under your control and you are not obligated to speak to anyone.
- If you hear an obscene or improper question KEEP CALM, if you have caller I.D. write the number down and HANG UP IMMEDIATELY. Crank callers want to get a frightened or angry response from you. So try not to analyze the caller or prolong the call. DO NOT answer if they call back.
- DON’T slam down the receiver because this lets the caller know s(he) has succeeded in bothering you.
- DO NOT give any information to strangers over the phone.
- DO NOT try to figure out who is calling. Extending the call is what the caller wants.
- DO NOT tell others of the calls. Many obscene or harassing calls are made by acquaintances, family members, or a boyfriend/girlfriend. ONLY discuss the calls with the proper authorities.
- NEVER give your phone number to strangers or anonymous callers.
- If you receive or have received late night or early morning calls unplug the phone or turn the ringer off.
- If the calls are received on an answering machine, SAVE the calls and share them with the proper authorities.
- If you receive the telephone calls on Wake Forest University, notify University Police immediately and make a report of the matter.
- If you receive the telephone calls off of Wake Forest University, notify local authorities. Report the calls to the local authorities and contact your service provider and request assistance on having the calls blocked, traced, or any assistance they can provide.
- DO NOT engage in conversation with the caller if you do not know them. YOU are in control, not the caller. DO NOT argue with; attempt to justify anything the caller may be complaining about. HANG UP.
- DO NOT humor the caller, give advice or personal opinions. HANG UP. Once you begin a dialogue with the caller they have succeeded in having a platform to speak on.
- Contact your local phone service provider to inquire about what other options may be available to you.
Crime Alert for February 17, 2005
FEMALE ASSAULTED
The Winston Salem Police Department is investigating the sexual assault of a student at a Bethabara Hills Court residence. The suspect has been described as an unknown race male wearing a black ski mask and dark clothing. He was armed with a semi-automatic handgun. The suspect speaks English but speaks with a Hispanic accent. All students are encouraged to do the following:
Risk Reduction Ideas
- Check to make sure all windows are fitted in place. If they do not have locks, consider having them installed.
- In basements or first-floor apartments, consider bars on the windows for added protection.
- The best door locks are deadbolt locks. For added security, install double locks.
- If you feel that someone is watching or following you, try not to let him know which apartment you've gone into. You may want to wait a few moments before you turn on the lights in your apartment, or go to a neighboring apartment where you know and trust someone.
- If someone wants your address, you need not give it out unless you feel completely comfortable with their reason for wanting it. It's fine not to give it out.
On the street:
- An attacker looks for essentially three things when selecting a victim: vulnerability, accessibility, and availability. Minimize these qualities as much as possible when you are alone on the street.
- When you are out at night, listen for footsteps or voices. Look around to see if someone is following you. This sends a message that you are aware of your surroundings and are thinking about your safety.
- Try to avoid being out alone if you are drunk or high or upset about something. This distracts you from being aware of what's going on around you. Ask a trusted friend to go with you.
Lots of people are careless about locking their home. Many criminals pick their victims by looking at what home is easy to break into. Below is a link with a checklist for your home with suggestions to deter this type of crime.

FEMALES ASSAULTED
On the night of February 5th unknown suspects (one at each residence) made entry into off campus residences occupied by female students on Polo Road and Crown Oaks Apartments. One victim may have been sexually assaulted and the other was physically assaulted. In one instance the residence door may have been unlocked. Descriptions of the offenders are not available at this time. Winston Salem Police Department is investigating these crimes.
All students are encouraged to do the following:
- Lock your door even when you intend to return home shortly or even if you are just going down the hall. Don’t leave an open invitation.
- Don’t prop open self locking doors! It may be a hassle, but the security is worth it.
- Call 911 to report suspicious persons or activity in or around your neighborhood
- Always be aware of your surroundings, whether you are on the street, an office building, the mall, driving or waiting for a bus
- Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave. Uneasy? Uncomfortable? Get out!
- Use your head to protect your body
- Watch those isolated areas, laundromats, library stacks, labs, locker rooms, computer centers especially at night. GO with a friend or use the campus escort service.
- Have your key ready before you reach the door – home, car, work or dorm
- Know yourself and capabilities
- There is no perfect way to protect yourself, but there are simple things that you can do to protect yourself.
Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police CrimeStoppers at 727-2800 or Wake Forest University Police CrimeStoppers at 758-4477.
