TITLE:
A Neutrino Mass Story
SPEAKER:
Professor Chris Walter,
TIME: Wednesday March 29, 2017 at 4:00 PM
PLACE: Room 101 Olin Physical Laboratory
ABSTRACT
In this talk, I will introduce the field of
experimental neutrino physics and will review how a set of experiments
in the last decade have given us our current understanding of neutrino
properties. I will first explain how, in the Super-Kamiokande
experiment, we used neutrinos produced in the upper atmosphere of the
Earth to show that these ghostly particles have mass. This work was
recognized with the Nobel Prize for physics in 2015. Then, I will set
this result in the larger context of neutrino physics today. I will
point out remaining questions and introduce some of today’s state of the
art experiments, including ones that shoot beams of neutrinos across
entire countries.
