TITLE: Quantum Dots and Microspheres and Whispering Gallery Modes! Oh, my!
SPEAKER: Prof. Kenith E. Meissner
TIME: Thursday March 25 at 3 PM
PLACE: George P. Williams, Jr. Lecture Hall, (Olin 101)
Microstructured optical elements offer unique opportunities for the design of novel biomedical sensing and imaging systems. Here, I will present recent work with quantum dot-coupled microspheres. The attachment of quantum dots to silica and polystyrene microspheres will be described. The use of these structures for Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) experiments in a hybrid scanning confocal/AFM microscope will also be discussed. Additionally, these structures can support resonant effects known as whispering gallery modes (WGMs). The basis of WGMs will be explained along with their use in sensing and imaging applications.
