ABSTRACT

One form of chaotic inflation has two weakly coupled scalar fields (one massive and classical and the other quantum without mass) interacting with one another. Once inflation is complete, the modes of the quantum field increases exponentially in amplitude. This process is known as parametric resonance. This study takes an in-depth look at the cases where the classical field is affected by the quantum field ψ and when it is not. The classical field Φ always affects the modes of the quantum field. When the classical field is affected by a quantum field, exponential growth occurs in certain modes of the quantum field. This motivates determining whether or not quantities such as <ψ2> diverge. Finally the case of simultaneous coupling is investigated to see if any of the exponentially growing modes are missed in the numerical calculation of <ψ2> which would make all its calculations inaccurate.
