Because of the high price of natural gas, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Power Plants are receiving a lot of attention in the electric power industry. In an IGCC, coal is first gasified into CO and H2 or "syngas". This syngas is then fired in a highly efficient combined cycle power plant which features a combustion turbines as well as a steam turbine. The overall efficiency of an IGCC is significantly higher than conventional coal plants and its emissions are an order of magnitude better. In this presentation, Dr. Phillips will briefly explain how an IGCC works and will show how it compares, thermodynamically and environmentally, to other fossil fuel-based power generation options.
