ABSTRACT

The Physical Review's mission is to publish the best original research papers in Physics. Physics Today strives to cover the highlights of research published in those journals (and elsewhere) and present the developments in a way that all physicists can understand. I've had the privilege to work for both publications and will describe the editorial operations and the kinds of problems editors routinely face: deciding what to accept or reject, say, or choosing what topic to report on -- from animal acoustics to Z pinches. Afterward, you might finally be able to answer why it took nearly four months to get a decision about your last Phys. Rev. Lett.
