WFU Physics Colloquium

Thursday, August 31, 2000 -- Olin Physical Laboratory

Refreshments -- 3:00 PM (Lobby) & Announcements -- 3:30 PM (Room 101) & Lab Tours -- 4:00 PM

Welcoming Announcements

The purpose of this first seminar is to help new, returning, and prospective students (including both undergraduate and graduate students) and faculty to become acquainted with each other and with the Physics Department. After refreshments in the lounge in the lobby of Olin Physical Laboratory (3:00-3:30 PM), we will meet in the George P. Williams, Jr. Lecture Hall (Olin 101) for some important announcements.

Research Opportunities in Physics -- Part I: Experiment

The Physics Department has many opportunities for undergraduate students (as well as graduate students) to participate in research. Some of the projects in experimental physics will be described in this session. Some of the theoretical and computational projects will be described in the following week.

Our newest faculty member -- Jeremy Qualls is still setting up his laboratory -- so he will use a brief seminar format to describe his work on developing new materials and studying their properties using strong magnetic fields.

Following Jeremy's presentation, we will have a tour of the experimental labs, in two smaller groups with an approximate schedule as follows:
