Prof. Jed Macosko Wins Teaching Award for Entrepreneurship Class

Prof. Jed Macosko, Assistant Professor of Physics and faculty member at WFU's Center for Structural Biology, was awarded the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award for Course Development. Professor Macosko developed and taught "Harnessing Life's Molecular Machines: From AIDS Tests to Hydrogen Cars", a first-year seminar focused on making useful devices out of the tiny protein machines found in every living cell.

Twelve students attended this class, six of whom have gone on to form a non-profit company called BioBotz that competed for and won a $1000 New Venture Seed Grant from WFU's Center for Entrepreneurship. Surprisingly, the company's focus is not on high-tech biological devices, but on teaching children about the fascinating world of molecular machines. Recently, this company was featured at "Windows on Wake Forest" and is submitting applications for over $250,000 in funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and other sources.
