An ac powered electromagnet with an iron core that extends vertically from the coil.

Faraday's Law of Induction, Lentz's Law.

When a conducting ring is placed on the iron bar and the coil is subsequently energized, the ring flies into the air.

A split ring, which does not form a complete circuit, remains stationary.

A ring that is placed on the iron bar with the coil already energized will be suspended part way down the bar.

A Coke can hovers. Since it is not as thick as the ring, the current is smaller. It can hover, but it does not fly high in the air.	Video.	Still.
A Pepsi can sits still. When the instructor turns the Pepsi can around, you can see that it has been cut and taped. The voltage is still induced, but without a complete circuit (a complete can), there is no current.	Video.	Still.
