Baptist students awarded scholarships to attend Wake Forest

Twenty North Carolina Baptist students were awarded the William Louis Poteat Scholarship to attend Wake Forest University in the fall 2010.  Each scholarship is valued at $12,500 and is renewable for four years for a total value of $50,000.

Named for Wake Forest’s president from 1905 to 1927, the Poteat scholarships are awarded annually to students who are active members of a Baptist church in North Carolina; have demonstrated excellence in leadership and service in their churches; and have excelled in academics.

Poteat Scholars show promise of making vital contributions to the church community during college and after graduation.  The scholarship recipients are:

  • Elizabeth Alexander of Wilmington is the daughter of Kathy Alexander and the late Thomas Alexander and a senior at John T. Hoggard High School.  She is a member of First Baptist Church, Wilmington.
  • Jessica Blackburn of Mill Spring is the daughter of Kenneth and Karen Blackburn and a senior at Polk County High School.  She is a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
  • Tiffany Blackburn of Mill Spring is the daughter of Kenneth and Karen Blackburn and a senior at Polk County High School.  She is a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
  • Abby Bledsoe of Mount Airy is the daughter of Clark and Amy Bledsoe and a senior at Mount Airy High School.  She is a member of First Baptist Church, Mount Airy.
  • Garrett Bowman of Madison is the son of Johnny and Meliea Bowman and a senior at Dalton McMichael High School.  He is a member of First Baptist Church, Mayodan.
  • Ansley Byers of Fuquay-Varina is the daughter of Troy and Kimberly Byers and a senior at Middle Creek High School.  She is a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
  • Seth Collie of Newton is the son of Roy and Kimberly Collie and a senior at Maiden High School.  He is a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.
  • Candice Denton of Wendell is the daughter of Richard and Leaster Denton and a senior at Needham B. Broughton High School.  She is a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
  • Matthew Harris of Charlotte is the son of Mark and Elizabeth Harris and a senior at The McCallie School.  He is a member of First Baptist Church, Charlotte.
  • Michael Hunter of Kernersville is the son of Jeff and Janice Hunter and a senior at Wesleyan Christian Academy.  He is a member of Triad Baptist Church.
  • Nicholas Krebs of Elizabeth City is the son of John and Terry Krebs and a senior at Pasquotank County High School.  He is a member of Berea Baptist Church.
  • Paul Langston, Jr. of Clinton is the son of Paul and Pamela Langston and a senior at Clinton High School.  He is a member of Warsaw Baptist Church.
  • Brittani Level of High Point is the daughter of John and Sonia Level and a senior at James B. Dudley High School.  She is a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
  • Holly Chen Lien of Huntersville is the daughter of Bon-Hsiang and Chuan-Chuan Lien and a senior at North Mecklenburg High School.  She is a member of Lake Norman Baptist Church.
  • Jennifer Pearson of Shelby is the daughter of Tracy Pearson and the late Andrea Pearson and a senior at Crest High School.  She is a member of Westwood Heights Baptist Church.
  • Katherine Rodgers of High Point is the daughter of Charles Rodgers and the late Karla Rodgers and the granddaughter of Peggy and George Gillie.  She is a senior at High Point Central High School and a member of First Baptist Church, High Point.
  • Owen Stone of Raleigh is the son of Thomas and Yvonne Stone and a senior at Saint David’s School.  He is a member of Christ Baptist Church.
  • Sarah Teague of Cherryville is the daughter of Michael and Mary Teague and a senior at Cherryville High School.  She is a member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church.
  • Davis Troxler of Denver is the son of James and Pamela Troxler and a senior at North Lincoln High School.  He is a member of Denver Baptist Church.
  • Kelly Watson of Randleman is the daughter of Steven and Cynthia Watson and a senior at Asheboro High School.  She is a member of First Baptist Church.
