'Season of Scandal' continues at Wake Forest with Steve Martin's 'The Underpants'
January 26, 2009
The Wake Forest University Theatre will continue its “Season of Scandal” with Steve Martin’s adaptation of “The Underpants” beginning Feb. 13. Evening performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13-14 and 18-21, and a matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 22. All performances will be held in the MainStage Theatre in Scales Fine Arts Center.
Originally written by Carl Sternheim, “The Underpants” is a comedy about society, politics and sex that revolves around a man named Theobald and his wife, Louise. In the play, Theobald is mortified after his wife’s underpants fall down while they are waiting to see the king pass by in a parade. So convinced that the mishap will ruin him by jeopardizing his job and reputation, he is blind to how the incident causes his wife to realize how desperately bored she is with her life.
The play will be directed by John E. R. Friedenberg, director of theatre at Wake Forest.
Tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for senior citizens; and $5 for students. Group rates are available. Tickets are available through the Wake Forest Theatre Box Office from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call (336) 758-5295, email WFUTheatreTix@wfu.edu or visit www.wfu.edu/theatre.
